Conway Police Raise Thousands for Special Olympics

Conway, SC (April 18, 2018) – Each year, the Conway Police Department participates in various events to raise money for the Special Olympics. The mission of the Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The organization gives them numerous opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other athletes, and the community.

On April 4, 2018, the Conway Police Department teamed up with students in the Criminal Justice Club of Horry-Georgetown Technical College to put on the second annual "Cover the Cruiser" event to raise money for our local athletes to participate in the games. The students and officers with the department sold t-shirts, hats, bracelets, and sticky notes that were used to cover a Conway Police Department patrol car.

"Together, we raised $1,486.01 to fund programs throughout the year for local athletes in our area. This beat last year's total by $267.09," said Sergeant Johnathan McAllister with the Conway Police Department.

Last Thursday and Friday, Conway Police also participated in "Cops on the Coop" at Chick-fil-a on Church Street in Conway. There, they again beat the department’s record for money raised. In two days, the department collected donations, sold t-shirts, wristbands, and hats to people in the community. A total of $11,445 was collected and 100% of the profit will go to the South Carolina Special Olympics.

"By law enforcement raising this money, by you donating to this cause, we are able to support these athletes. We are pay for their training, to pay for the equipment that they need, to help them and take that stress off of them so they can focus on training," said McAllister.

Members of the Conway Police Department also participated in the 2018 Torch Run this morning with agencies around the county.

The Conway Police Department would like to thank all of the community members and surrounding law enforcement agencies who gave generously to this great cause.
