Local Government Joins Grassroots Efforts to Focus on Litter, Beautification, and Recycling!

(Conway, SC) – Keep South Carolina Beautiful, the state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, Inc., and a division of PalmettoPride, welcomes the City of Conway to its expanding community-based Network of Affiliates with the certification of Keep Conway Beautiful (KCB).

“We are proud to see Conway making litter, beautification and recycling a priority,” stated Mallory Coffey, Keep South Carolina Beautiful State Leader. “Becoming an affiliate is an extensive process, only undertaken by those who understand the commitment needed to create a cleaner, greener and more beautiful community for the future.”

After a year of researching their community, KCB finalized their affiliate certification with an Advisory Board Training. During the training, several board members discussed the need to not only pick up the litter in Conway, but to educate the citizens and visitors of Conway on issues of litter and enforce local and state litter laws. “Keep Conway Beautiful has an 18-month strategic plan to focus on pickup, awareness, education and enforcement. They understand it requires a variety of paths to create a litter-free and beautiful community,” said Coffey.

Their strategic plan is split into the three pillars of KAB:  litter, beautification, waste reduction and recycling. Their litter projects will focus on adopting neighborhoods as cleanup sections in order to lower their Litter Index Scoreand will include campaigns to target uncovered loads. When it comes to beautification, KCB plans to utilize their Tree Grant Award from PalmettoPride to host tree planting workshops for families. In terms of waste reduction and recycling, KCB knows behaviors need to change, but before they begin they will conduct a city-wide survey to gather data on issues, questions, and concerns of local citizens.

“The strategic plan Keep Conway Beautiful created, addresses the issues discovered during their litter index and during the research of their local ordinances and programs,” explained Coffey. “We were impressed by these volunteers, not only because of their efforts and ability to understand every part of the affiliate process, but because they know it is up to them and the citizens of Conway to take ownership of their community. An affiliate board does not give tasks to the local government to complete, but is hands-on to reach a solution.”

Nevada Mileur, The City of Conway’s new Litter Control Coordinator said, “I’m grateful to be able to impact my community in such a positive way, and I look forward to managing and contributing to efforts to make Conway even more beautiful than it already is.”

We want to thank our Keep Conway Beautiful Board for their commitment to seeing a litter free Conway. Members of the Keep Conway Beauitful Board: Ben Burroughs (Chairperson), Steve Mangum (Vice Chairperson), Kathy Mangum (Secretary), Janice DeAngelis (Member), Chris Oglebay (Member), Jill Miller (Member), Timmy Williams, (Grounds and Maintenance Director), Nevada Mileur (Litter Control Coordinator).
