City Moves Forward with Planning For Additional Tennis and Pickleball Courts

CITY MOVES FORWARD WITH PLANNING FOR ADDITIONAL TENNIS AND PICKLEBALL COURTS
In September 2018, Hurricane Florence floodwaters stood several feet over the the Riverfront Tennis Center resulting in the closure of the facility and subsequent demolition. The Riverfront Tennis Center's previous location was in the Waccamaw River floodplain. The City has explored locations that would avoid the devastation of any future flood events.

At the April 4, 2022 City Council meeting, leaders approved moving forward with a procured engineering firm to develop future site plans. After receiving feedback from our tennis and pickleball community and U.S. Tennis Association the City has developed the following preliminary conceptual plan to be incorporated into a site plan:
-2 asphalt tennis courts at Collins Park
-2 pickleball courts at Collins Park
-new basketball court at Collins Park
-3 clay courts at Billy Gardner Recreation Complex
The additions above will be included in site plans. The site plan will include grading, stormwater relocation, court irrigation, fences, and walkways to accommodate the new facilities.

Site plans created by engineers will be reviewed by City Council in a public meeting before procuring a construction company.
