Conway Native Vanessa Wyche Receives Order of the Palmetto

Vanessa Wyche, a Conway, South Carolina native, was recently awarded the Order of the Palmetto by Governor Henry McMaster in Columbia, South Carolina.

Wyche leads NASA’s Johnson Space Center, which is home to America’s astronaut corps, Mission Control Center, International Space Station, Orion and Gateway programs, and its more than 10,000 civil service and contractor employees. She oversees a broad range of human spaceflight activities, including development and operation of human spacecraft, commercialization of low-Earth orbit, and the center’s role in landing the first woman and first person of color on the surface of the Moon.

The Order of the Palmetto is the State of South Carolina’s highest civilian honor presented in recognition of a lifetime of extraordinary achievement, service and contributions on a national or statewide scale. An individual must be nominated for the Order of the Palmetto. This once in a lifetime award may only be presented to natives or residents of the State of South Carolina.
