PUBLIC INPUT NEEDED: Comprehensive Plan Update

The City of Conway Planning and Development Department will be hosting public input drop-in sessions to get resident's feedback to update the 2035 Comprehensive Plan. Staff will be hosting 3 drop-in meetings to discuss the Population Element, Housing Element, and Resiliency Element, respectively, to the Comprehensive Plan.

WHAT IS THE COMPREHENSIVE PLAN? The Comprehensive Plan is a vision and roadmap that guides future growth and development in the City of Conway.  The Plan guides decisions on where to locate new jobs and houses, how to improve our transportation system, and where to make capital investments.  Our Plan is the framework for most of Conway’s big-picture decisions on how to grow while preserving and improving our neighborhoods.  In South Carolina, communities are required to prepare new Comprehensive Plans every 10 years and update it every five years. It addresses a wide range of topics that affect how we experience the City, including  housing, economic development, community facilities, natural resources, cultural resources, land use, population, transportation, and priority investments.  These topics are addressed in individual chapters, called “elements.”  The Plan studies existing conditions and identifies implementation strategies to help the City reach its goals.

PUBLIC MEETING DROP-IN SCHEDULE
Meetings will be held as a drop-in to allow residents to review information gathered by staff. Residents will then have the opportunity to provide feedback relative to the element.

Drop-In Meeting 1 - Population Element: Tuesday, September 13, 2022 | 5:30pm - 7:00pm | Planning & Building Department, 196 Laurel Street
The population element includes information related to historic trends and projections; the number, size and characteristics of households; educational levels and trends; income characteristics and trends; race; sex; age; and other information relevant to a clear understanding of how the population affects the existing situation and future potential of our community.

Drop-In Meeting 2 - Housing Element: Tuesday, September 20, 2022 | 5:30pm - 7:00pm | Planning & Building Department, 196 Laurel Street
This element includes an analysis of existing housing by location, type, owner and renter occupancy, affordability, and projections of housing needs to accommodate existing and future population as identified in the population and economic elements.

Drop-In Meeting 3 - Resiliency Element: Tuesday, September 27, 2022 | 5:30pm - 7:00pm | Planning & Building Department, 196 Laurel Street
This element provides insight to the ability of a community to respond, adapt, and thrive under changing conditions, including, but not limited to, recurrent burdens and sudden disasters. This includes natural (flooding), technological (power or communication outages), public health (pandemic), and economic disasters.
