Public Notice - Annual Water Distribution Flushing Program

PUBLIC NOTICE - Annual Water Distribution Flushing Program

During March 2023, the drinking water disinfectant will convert from chloramines to free chlorine for all City of Conway water customers west of the Waccamaw River. This temporary disinfectant change has been completed for the past nine years.

The City of Conway buys its water from Grand Strand Water and Sewer Authority ( GSWSA). At the Bull Creek Service Water Treatment Plant, GSWSA utilizes chloramines as a disinfectant instead of free chlorine. Chloramines are considered a better long-term disinfectant because they are less reactive, produce lower levels of disinfectant by-products, and remain in the distribution system for extended periods. However, free chlorine is a more reactive disinfectant. Therefore this temporary change during March helps eliminate any bacteria that may have become resistant to the weaker and less aggressive chloramine disinfectant.

The City is committed to providing high-quality drinking water to our customers. This temporary disinfectant change ensures the highest level of safety and integrity of the water in the water system. If you have any questions or comments, please call the City of Conway Utility Department at (843) 248-1770.
