Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) and its counterpart, Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) are rare, paralyzing, and potentially catastrophic disorders of the peripheral nervous system.

These disorders are characterized by sudden onset of severe weakness and paralysis of the legs, arms, face, and muscles required for breathing, chewing and swallowing. The course of GBS and CIDP varies widely among individuals victimized; some have shorter bouts followed by spontaneous recovery, others experience repeated bouts with partial recovery between relapses.

The Guillain Barré Foundation International (now the GBS-CIDP Foundation International) was founded in 1980 to provide a support network for patients and their families.

This GBS-CIDP proclamation is intended to promote early diagnosis, and improvements in medical treatment, research, and access to effective healthcare through public awareness in the City of Conway, bringing attention to this catastrophic combined disorder to the people of Conway to promote awareness, and improved private and public support of those affected, their families, and their access to needed services and resources.
